RESEARCH- Applying The Four Concepts To A Music Video

The Saturdays - 'Ego'
I will be using The Saturdays - 'Ego' music video to apply the four key media concepts; narrative, genre, media language and the representation to help clarify which genre the video is in and who as an audience the video appeals to.

The Saturdays song 'Ego' has the 'pop' genre, this video is a typical 'girl group' video with the cars, the superhero/superstar coustumes which relate to the song words 'and now you wanna pretend that you a superstar', and also the makeup. In many girl group video's such as 'Girls Aloud' they have very little clothing on; the fact that they have very little clothing on is appealing to BOTH boys and girls as the boys watch it because they enjoy watching them and the girls watch it because they want to be like them.
(Three different shots from a Girls Aloud video and The Saturdays video)

The video's narrative structure of the song starts off as non linear which then changes to linear although there isn't really an equilibrium. The girls' position in the narrative is the narrotor but also the participant as they are telling the story but are also part of it. The lyrics in this video relate to the narrative by being illustrative even though some times the lyrics are different to the images on the screen.

You would expect the lighting to be bright as it is a pop video, to make it lively and bubbly but in this music video the lighting is no where like bright, its more dim than bright; I think that this is done to create an effect which works well.
