RESEARCH - Task 1: Apply The 4 Key Concepts To A Music Video

I have chosen The Script as the artist/band as they are very well known with their hit song ‘The man who can’t be moved.’ I am going to analyse this song as it has appealled to me more in terms of the clear meaning of the lyrics and the video that defines the title of this song.

The Script is an Irish band (currently based in London) who is known for their alternative rock songs. The genre is illustrated through the use of settings and location. The music video starts off with a short few chords of an electric guitar while the lead singer is walking in the street. There are only two locations and settings in this music video, the street and a look-a-like parking space in a building’s basement. The lighting is dim with a little light peeping through the windows. It creates an emotional atmosphere, and matches with the heartbreaking narrative of the song. Iconography, the use of electric guitars and drums also symbolises their genre. The black plain clothes is also used by the whole band. I would say that this type of costumes are conventional for an alternative rock band.

Editing is thoroughly used in this music video. It begins with quick cuts between the shadow and the different angles of the lead singer, quick cuts of the locations, when on the street and the basement and the featured people who are walking in the street. It is quite a fast pace video in terms of the quick cuts. Fast forward of the locations and seasons, which shows how long he has been waiting and how everything around him are moving on apart from him. The quick cuts and the fast forwards illustrates the time that had passed. Overall, the editing is conventional to this genre as the edits such as the quick cuts, matches with the beat/chords of the song, so as the locations/settings and costumes.

This music video uses a linear narrative structure, apart from the cutaways of him and the band in the chorus. This is about a man who can’t be moved as he is still hoping and waiting in one corner for the woman that he randomly met in the street. There was a lot of disruption in this music video. He was approached by a policewoman and news reporters, people looking and talking about him in the street, and lastly, they showed his conditions when he stayed in one corner throughout the four seasons. The central artist’s position in the narrative is the participant. He is the character in their narrative. The music video is illustrative as the scenes where he did not move and just stayed in one place fits with the title of the song. Again, the watch is one of the iconography, symbolises the time, which also links to the narrative as it portray deeper meanings.

This music video can also be a representation of men. “The man who can’t be moved”, through the illustration of the music video, it shows their strength and patience. It is a song but can also be a TV drama as it has a story in it. The use of women as the police, broadcaster and the crowd shows the women’s amazement and how they are intrigue of the survival of a ‘broken-hearted’ man. As ‘young woman’ observer, the representation of a man in this music video appeals more to women as this is the ‘ideal man’ that every women wants. But it can appeal to both genders as anyone can relate to it in terms of its heart-breaking story. It talks about the loss when you are in a relationship and how it is hard to move on. A very common and relatable song and video.
